He then asks Light how his hands are and says that he had heard he was rubbing them so much that his fingerprints are gone. He appears jealous of Light and reminds him how quickly he rose up the Mafia's ranks. After the assassins talk amongst themselves and agree to work alone, the meeting ends and Zenji meets up with Light, asking him how things are going. Assassin D requests a floor plan of the building and Assassin E requests a map. He leaves the method up to him and tells them to ask if they need anything. Zenji explains that their mission is to eliminate the Phantom Troupe, explaining that they may return to the auction that night. They hear the door opening, and Kurapika and Light join the meeting. Zenji replies that Light isn't his boss and says that it's his own business if he wants to be upset.

As Zenji criticizes Light, one of his men reminds him that Zenji's boss depends on his daughter's fortunes. Zenji says that it seems everyone is present as he counts them, but one of his men says that the Nostrade Family is sending one more. On September 3 rd at an undisclosed hotel, Zenji waits with the six freelance assassins as Silva and Zeno Zoldyck enter the room. He is also extremely vindictive, which he showed by trying to outbid Kurapika at the Underground Auction and later attempting to kill him before Kurapika's bloodlust left him terrified. He becomes irritated very easily and did not hesitate to punch Light in front of multiple witnesses, even encouraging Kurapika to stab him while he was being held at knifepoint. Zenji is a pretentious individual who despises Light Nostrade for his quick rise through the ranks of the Mafia and the unconventional way he did so, which Light interprets as jealousy.
